As part of its ongoing commitment to education and community development, Usha Martin Foundation implemented the BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) initiative at Government Middle School, Mahilong, focusing on students from Classes IV to VIII. This initiative reimagines traditional school infrastructure by transforming walls and physical spaces into dynamic and interactive learning tools. It aims to foster visual, experiential, and contextual learning, making education more engaging and meaningful for young minds.
The project was designed with multiple objectives: to utilize school spaces as active learning environments, promote awareness of environmental issues through creative and visual representations, support teachers in adopting experiential, child-centric teaching methods, and create a joyful and stimulating educational atmosphere. The thematic focus of the BaLA paintings included key environmental concepts such as the water cycle, waste segregation, biodiversity, renewable versus non-renewable resources, tree plantation and the oxygen cycle, climate change, and pollution.
Through this initiative, the school’s hall has been successfully transformed into an immersive and impactful learning space, particularly enhancing environmental education. The BaLA project stands as a testament to Usha Martin Foundation’s commitment to innovative, inclusive, and sustainable education that empowers students and supports holistic learning.
